FAQ

What is hand dyed yarn?

Hand dyed yarn is yarn that has been coloured in small batches by an independent dyer, rather than mass-produced in a factory. Each skein is dyed using hands-on techniques, which means no two are ever completely identical.

Unlike commercially dyed yarn, hand dyed yarn often features rich, layered colour variations, from subtle tonal shades to bold variegated and speckled effects. These unique colourways are created using different dyeing methods, giving each skein its own character.

Because it is produced in small batches, hand dyed yarn offers a more individual and creative feel. It is especially popular with knitters and crocheters who want their projects to stand out and feel truly one-of-a-kind.

At The Yarn Artist, all yarn is hand dyed in the UK in small batches, with colour inspiration drawn from art and creative experimentation.

Why is hand dyed yarn more expensive?

Hand dyed yarn reflects the time, skill and materials involved in small-batch production. Each skein is individually dyed, rinsed and finished by hand, rather than produced at scale in a factory.

Costs also include high-quality yarn bases, professional dyes, water usage and the time taken to create unique colourways. As an indie yarn dyer in the UK, every skein is part of a carefully crafted process designed to produce something distinctive and long-lasting.

The result is a premium, artisan yarn with depth of colour and individuality that you won’t find in mass-produced alternatives.

Custom and Personalised Orders

Do you accept custom orders?
Yes, I’m happy to take on custom orders for my hand dyed yarn. A 50% deposit is required upfront to cover materials, with the remaining balance due before dispatch. If you have a specific idea, colour palette or inspiration in mind, please get in touch and we can discuss the details.

Can I order larger quantities of a colourway?
If you need sweater or blanket quantities of a specific colourway, I can usually dye larger batches of my repeatable ranges. As each batch is hand dyed, there may be slight variations, so I recommend ordering enough for your project at once. Feel free to contact me to check availability and lead times.

Care Instructions

How do I wash items made with your yarn?
Although many yarn bases are superwash and suitable for gentle machine washing, I recommend hand washing in lukewarm water using a mild detergent. Gently squeeze out excess water and lay flat to dry to help maintain the shape and longevity of your handmade items.

Will the colours bleed?
All yarn is thoroughly rinsed after dyeing, but it is normal for hand dyed yarn to release a small amount of excess dye during the first wash, especially with highly saturated colours. I recommend washing items separately the first time.

How should I store my yarn?
Store your yarn in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to help maintain colour vibrancy.

Allergen Policy

Do you have pets or smoke in your workspace?
All yarn is dyed in a pet-free and smoke-free environment.

Do you use scented products?
Yarn is washed using Ecover and rinsed thoroughly. If you have sensitivities, please feel free to get in touch before ordering.

Wholesale Orders

Do you accept wholesale orders?
Yes, I welcome wholesale enquiries from yarn shops and stockists. Please email me to discuss pricing, minimum order quantities and lead times.

Ethical Yarns

Is your yarn mulesing-free?
Yes. Ethical sourcing is very important to The Yarn Artist. The wool used in my hand dyed yarn is sourced from Peru and Britain, where mulesing is not practised.

How is your yarn produced?
I work with trusted suppliers who prioritise animal welfare and high-quality fibres, ensuring that every skein meets the standards expected from an indie yarn dyer in the UK.
